And now –

SECRETS AND –

THE SPACE BETWEEN THE SPACE

A secret. A deep secret.

As you think about these words, what comes up personally for you?

Hold onto that. I’ll tell you why I’m asking.

A few months ago, I wake up muttering:

The space between the space…”

I realize that I’ve been repeating these words over, and over again in a dream.

I have a group of colleagues with whom I meet weekly, and when I tell them about this and mention this phrase, each naturally, has their own interpretation of what the words: the space between the space might mean.

I flash on the spaces between the beats in rhythm. I start thinking of the space between the space in dance.

One colleague mentions the negative space in drawings, or in a photo.

I’m haunted by the phrase, and yet—can’t say what it personally means to me.

But my first inkling is:

The space between other spaces in my body. Some internal space, maybe a sort of a cellular “deep space,” whatever this could be.

And as the weeks go by, I wonder:

Is it the space between my thoughts? The space between my words? How about the space between my blood vessels and my bones?

Next, I question:

Is it about opening spaces? Or closing spaces?

I commence to caulk up drafty holes in my 1920’s bungalow home.

Meantime, totally impulsively, and without consciously thinking about the space between the space, I start throwing things out.

Old notebooks, and old memoirs. Stuff in my favorite “junk draw” that I no longer need to keep. I give away clothing. Move over, Marie Kondo—I’m one of those who loves to toss and get rid of things!

That is, I have no problem throwing away physical objects. That’s easy for me.

But –

What about my thoughts?

What about my feelings?

What about my secrets?

Ahh…my body freezes.

Bingo! It’s this last one!

I need to take a moment and sit with this.

I wonder if you might too.

For don’t we all have secrets?

Don’t you?

Family secrets.

Couples’ secrets.

Childhood secrets.

Success and failure secrets.

Financial secrets.

Not all are equally impactful.

Not all feel problematic now.

But—what did you flash on?

I ask myself:

What about the one I flashed on that made me freeze?

And next I wonder:

Why do we keep secrets at all?

Here, we might each have our own answers.

Maybe at one point you needed a particular secret.

Maybe at one point, you were told never to tell.

Maybe at one point, holding tight to it helped you, or felt like it was the only way to survive.

But what about now?

I ask because –
I dip into my own barrel of secrets.

Could there be one, of which I’m ready to let go?

But not in a tell-all book.

Not even by necessarily whispering them to friends.

For here’s the irony of not all, but certainly many secrets:

Often, we’ve not even acknowledged, and I mean truthfully acknowledged to ourselves, that we even have this particular secret at all.

I say this now, for I’ve spotted the clue—my body’s clue:

Secrets take up so much energy!

And become –

Big knots of frozen energy.

Again, I examine the one that popped up for me.

Yeah, okay—I’ll admit it’s mine.
But do I need it?
Right now, still need it?

Again, my body answers, and quickly, as if it loves this question.

I sense the knot of energy within me loosen and dissolve.

I begin to get what the space between the space means to me.

Think about it this way:

We can neither create nor destroy energy, only transform it from one form of energy to another.

So one choice is:

Want to keep it as a frozen knot, or deploy it more fluidly, towards something that you now want to do?

I’ll add –

Not all secrets should be told. I want to make a distinction between something, of whatever nature, that is intensely private for you, and that you consciously feel no need to shift nor share.

Nor is this about a dump-all cathartic release, nor about mindlessly divulging something that is confidential and entrusted to you by someone else.

Rather, I’m speaking to those places, those sites—I’ll call it those deep spaces within you of balled-up energy.

Often –
The release of such a secret can jump-start revitalization and healing, even when you acknowledge and release it solely to yourself.

Holidays can be an ideal time to practice this, for think about it –

We tend to gather with our fellow humans, many with whom we share a complex history and an ocean of memories. It’s a powerful setting for conscious and unconscious secrets to pop up.

However, there is a lighter side:

You know how it can feel, after you make a much-needed shift?

Say, for example, you decide to give yourself a few hours more sleep in the morning. Sometimes, it’s only once you’re revived and rested, that you can see just how drained and tired you’ve been.

That’s how it can work after releasing energy. Energy that’s no longer helpful, energy that might be frozen, even toxic, or simply holding you back.

You might not realize how much this energy impacts you, until it’s released and transformed, and you’ve moved to a new energetic place.

Now when I think of “the space between the space,” I flash on:

Expansion.

Extension.

Refueled energy.

Making space within myself to open, re-charge, re-balance, and re-focus anew.

Yes, it feels like deep space.

An internal space.

Includes the energetic realm and space of secrets.

Consider:

Is there a secret you hold that’s ready to be released?

The power and the beauty is –

You get to choose.

Thank you.
